Ian Fisk (SOM Õ01), one of the founders of Hands on DC, led a motivated and organized crew of volunteers to support public schools in Washington DC on May 1, 2004. IanÕs wife (Lorin) and four other SOM graduates (Heidi Robinson Õ02, Jim Stroiney Õ01, and Renee Jacob Õ00) joined more than 25 other volunteers to improve the environment of the Springarn Senior High School in Northeast DC. The volunteers made the hallways brighter by painting parts of the first floor and the surrounding environment a little greener by landscaping around the front and side of the school.
This year Hands on DC supported 41 of DCÕs public schools through the efforts of 2500+ volunteers and raised over $13,000 for scholarships. Great job to everyone involved. And, thank you SOM volunteers. We will strive to get an even bigger group of SOMers together to support Ian and Hands on DC next year!
Hands on DC is an all-volunter project that creates better schools and brighter futures for students in the District of Columbia. Thousands of volunteers have a great time each spring as they join together for a one-day work-a-thon that improves conditions in the public schools and raises money for college scholarships. Since 1995 more than 19,000 volunters have created a better environment for learning in over 100 schools and have collected more than $400,000 to help local students pay for further education.
